Getting to Rome

Sunday May 12 - Monday May 13, 2013 Getting there-

Took BART to SFO airport for an uneventful albeit long flight on KLM 747-400 to Amsterdam. The ride was mostly comfortable except for the ocasional time when the guy in front of Chet would put his seat into the recline position and well then you know the rest. Arrived in Amsterdam and got on the next flight An Air France A320 which was very comfortable and clean and for some reason felt bigger than the 747-400 even though it wasn't. We had a short hop to Paris CDG where we caught a bus to Orly airport which is about 20 miles away.

We arrived at Orly airport and found this airport to be the poor cousin of CDG. It was just an older not as well kept up airport but you could tell it was possibly coming back up due to the low cost carrier there called EasyJet (the equivalent of the US Southwest). We found out though that the whole airport only allows one carry on which as you know if you are not prepared for this can be a problem. We ended up having to try to stuff (and I mean stuff) our "personal item" bag into the one allowed carry-on item. By this time we had been up for some 20+ hours so we were pretty tired. We hopped on this flight to Rome which was another A320 and promptly slept the whole way to Rome.

We got to Rome Fumichino, and saw there was a bus for 4 euros or a train for 14 euros and we ended up taking the multi stop train to the local stop and then hopped on the metro to the Cavour stop where we called person who was renting us the room from the AirBnB web site. Since we had arrived much later than normal we apologized and got the run-down on the place we were staying at. The apartment is nice being equipped with a kitchen, nice bathroom and a small storage area and a "Murphy bed" which, if you don't know, is a pull down bed that is normally in the verfical position but you rotate it downward into the horizontal position. It was very comfortable. We ran out to get some food for dinner since it was about 1045pm and quickly found a place a half block away where we had turnip greens and potatoes and proscuito cheese with mozzarella de bufalo which were both very good in this small ristorante and we had some wine which cost 5 euros for a glass and we likely would have bought a case of at home. (At least Chet would - knowing Chet). We promptly came back to the apartment and fell into a sleep coma because we were so tired.
